Nils Frahm and the rise of instrumental music: it let's you 'turn on your own cinema in your head'



Nils Frahm, a young composer and virtuoso piano player from Germany who also works with electronica and found sounds, returns to Australia to play the Sydney Opera House on October 14 in sold out shows.

Frahm began improvising at the age of 8 at the instigation of his father, who encouraged him to "play into the void". In an interview for his first tour of Australia for the Vivid festival in 2014, he discussed the rise in popularity of instrumental music, especially among younger listeners.

“It takes things from ambient music and electronic music and minimal music, which are kind of familiar already … It’s an illustrative music where you can pretty much turn on your own cinema in your head. That experience is beautiful, it’s very engaging.”
